Self-Care and Self-Care Ideas

So this past week I started my first week of graduate school for clinical mental health counseling. This week’s focus was on self-care as an obligation for both the counselor and the client, and well… everybody on the face of the earth. Unfortunately, not everyone takes this into consideration or makes the time for self-care in their daily lives.

Before I started graduate school, I did practice effective self-care practices. After this week’s readings though, I want to dedicate more time to it; I hope whoever is reading this will too after giving it some thought. I will list some ideas below, because each reader will be trying to meet a different need of self-care.

Physical Self-Care: Weight Lift, Cardio/aerobic exercises, Swimming, a simple walk in the park is what does the trick for me at times, Yoga, etc.

Social Self-Care: Call/Text/Facetime/Zoom friends and family, write letters, have a socially-distanced meal in an appropriate space, spend time with your family safely

Mental Self-Care: take deep breaths, meditate, write in a journal, listen to music, dance, spend time outside, take a nap, etc.

I’m sure there are many more ideas out there on Pinterest or YouTube, what I encourage my readers to do is to find something that is unique and beneficial to you.
