The Small Things
So I was communicating with one of my professors about being away from college. I told her that I was kind over not having commencement, that I was more upset about the smaller things about college and never getting to experience them again. The professor responded by saying that the small things are what make like. That hit me hard…
Ever since the pandemic started, I and many others have been worried about things such as graduation, formal dances, etc. I think those things may have been covering up for the fact, that we would not be having any kind of normalcy anytime soon. What really was bothering me was the fact that I couldn’t say goodbye to the people who helped build my character. These four years at Berry have been the best ones of my life, ones that I would not take back ever. I’m happy I got into the graduate school program, but am deeply saddened I can’t share the news in person with all my friends and professors who helped me get to this point.
Reflecting on this chapter in my life, the small things really were what makes life. I will forever miss walking across Berry’s campus and admiring the environment, getting a cup of coffee from Java City on Thursday mornings, being able to go on spontaneous adventures around campus or off, working at the library from 10 to closing, but most importantly the laughs and tears I shared with various people. While my fellow seniors and I don’t get to experience this ever again, we hope that our underclassmen friends will take the time to appreciate every moment Berry has to offer. As for everyone, appreciate the times you get to go out and get fresh air or eat dinner as a family, etc. Don’t take them for granted, because these memories may be all you have one day.
Lesson from the COVID-19 Pandemic: Focus on the little things and don’t put too much emphasis on the big things. Big things don’t happen as often as the little things do.
